These were trails for pack animals. The main park trail is a loop that circles the park and is 4.5 miles long or 7.2 kilometers. On your way to the ocean on the Mauka-Makai trail stop and see the petroglyphs. Stop at the beach to view the sea turtles (remain 20ft away). Walk the coastline and view the ocean and surf.  Think about how remote this land was in ancient times","The park has several miles of trails you can explore on foot! In ancient times long distance travel was primarily completed by ocean travel in \u003Cem>wa'a (\u003C\u002Fem>canoes), as it was a much quicker way to get to where you were going. Shorter travel, when necessary, was on the numerous trails that had major connectors to mauka-makai routes (mountain to ocean trails).  These trails are called\u003Cem> ala loa\u003C\u002Fem> (major prehistoric trails), \u003Cem>ala hele\u003C\u002Fem> or \u003Cem>ala lihi kai\u003C\u002Fem> (shorter coastal trails). The \u003Cem>Kekaha \u003C\u002Fem>region (lands without water) is the region that the park is located in (Called West Hawaii in modern times). Even today the trails are rough and hot, so it's not hard to imagine how difficult it would of been for the ancient Hawaiians to travel these routes without the modern gear that we have, like shoes and backpacks! \u003Cbr \u002F> \u003Cbr \u002F> The trail from the park visitor center (the Mauka-Makai trail) is the most popular trail in the park.  This 1.1 mile trail to the beach requires sturdy shoes, sun protection and plenty of water!
